Vivace: Lively

by Kwok Hang Lillian Young

Location: 321 Broadway Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102

On Broadway, next to the parking lot of Washington Mutual, there lies a tiny espresso sidewalk bar called Espresso Vivace. This bar gives a sense of locality to people by the uniqueness of its coffee and the friendliness of its atmosphere. The extensive public transportation services make the district very pedestrian friendly, which allow Broadway to engage in all kind of commercial and entertainment transactions. Both Broadway residents and “travelers” are welcome to travel on foot or by bicycle as the sidewalk are wide enough and stores are closed enough that people would not feel boring or tiring. Vivace’s customers come visit no matter it is sunny or rainy, day or night because plenty of seating with a canopy area provides a comfortable setting to stressful workmen as well as peaceful dwellers. The close relationship of the bar and the sidewalk gives customers, by passers, baristas, and strangers a welcoming and inviting atmosphere to start a conversation and interaction with each other. Filtered with music, customers enjoy and relax from their normal daily life and create their own experience. Because of its openness, incidents happen spontaneously. Every day is different and a cup of Vivace can make your day special.

Micro Urbanism

The term “micro-urbanism” describes small-scale urban spaces and design interventions that enable a wide variety of activities, events, processes and functions to take place. It also involves ways to reinterpret the urban landscape. As a class project, the purpose for creating this Guide is to bring attention to aspects of our everyday environment that are important but often neglected parts of the urban experiences.
